מִלּוֹן  ·  Glossary

The vocabulary of Kabbalah and Western occultism is often used without explanation — authors write for the already initiated. This dictionary is compiled for those who read the texts on this site and meet unfamiliar words. The concepts are grouped by theme, not alphabetically: this more accurately reflects how they are connected to one another.

Structure of the world

Ein Sof
אֵין סוֹף
Ein Sof

Literally — «without end», «the infinite». In Kabbalah, the primal source, the absolute infinity from which everything that exists proceeds. Ein Sof is not God in any personal sense — it is the impersonal Absolute, of which no positive statement can be made. Ein Sof is unknowable, indescribable, and does not act upon the world directly. Everything perceived as God is already the first emanation, the first self-limitation of Ein Sof.

Tzimtzum
צִמְצוּם
Tzimtzum

«Contraction» or «self-limitation». The central concept of Lurianic Kabbalah: Ein Sof, to make room for the world, contracted — vacated a space within itself. In this vacated space (halal) creation takes place. Tzimtzum is the first act, preceding all the rest. The Qliphoth appear precisely here: in what remains in the space after the contraction — the traces, the «remnants» (Reshimu) of the former presence.

Sephira  / Sephiroth
סְפִירָה  / סְפִירוֹת
Sephira / Sephiroth

The ten emanations through which Ein Sof manifests in the world. Each Sephirah is both a «vessel» for a particular quality of the infinite light, and that quality itself. The Sephiroth are arranged on the Tree of Life in a strict hierarchy: from Keter (the Crown) — the most abstract — down to Malkuth (the Kingdom) — the most concrete and material. They are linked by 22 paths, corresponding to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

→ see Etz Chaim, Qlipha
Etz Chaim
עֵץ חַיִּים
Etz Chaim

«The Tree of Life» — the principal structural diagram of Kabbalah. Ten Sephiroth organised into three columns and four «worlds» (Atziluth, Beriah, Yetzirah, Assiah), connected by 22 paths. The Tree describes both the structure of the universe and the structure of the human soul — in Kabbalah they are isomorphic. The term is also used for a specific text — the chief work of Chaim Vital, who set down the system of Isaac Luria.

Da'ath
דַּעַת
Da'ath

«Knowledge». A quasi-Sephirah — it is not counted among the ten, but is present as the semblance of an emanation in the Abyss between the three Supernals (Keter, Chokmah, Binah) and the other seven. Da'ath stands where the gap is ontologically necessary: it is knowledge before it has become anything specific — and therefore it is not anything. On the Dark Tree, Da'ath is the place where understanding becomes destructive. Linked to Choronzon.

→ see On the Abyss
Adam Kadmon
אָדָם קַדְמוֹן
Adam Kadmon

«The Primordial Man», «the Man Before». The first emanation of Ein Sof after Tzimtzum: the cosmic archetype of man, through whom the entire Divine light pours into the lower worlds. Adam Kadmon contains within himself all ten Sephiroth in their primal, undivided state. The earthly Adam is only a reflection, a reverberation of Kadmon. It was in the forming of Adam Kadmon that the first shift occurred which led to Shevirat ha-Kelim: the light issuing from his «eyes», «ears», «nose» created worlds, not all of which could hold the light.

Partzufim
פַּרְצוּפִים
Partzufim

«Faces» (sing. — Partzuf). The Lurianic re-conception of the Sephiroth after Shevirat ha-Kelim: instead of the shattered vessels, Partzufim are built up — whole «personalities» representing a reorganisation of the light. The chief Partzufim: Atik Yomin («The Ancient of Days»), Arikh Anpin («The Long-Suffering»), Aba («Father»), Ima («Mother»), Zeir Anpin («The Lesser Countenance»), Nukva («Wife», Shekhinah). Tikkun proceeds through the establishment of right relations among the Partzufim — the Yichudim. This turns Kabbalistic theurgy into a drama of relations within the Divine itself.

→ see Yichud
Reshimu
רְשִׁימוּ
Reshimu

«Trace», «remnant». A Lurianic concept: after Tzimtzum, what was left in the halal (the vacated space) was not an empty vacuum but a faint presence — the Reshimu, a trace of the former fullness of Ein Sof. The Reshimu is what makes creation possible: matter into which the newly issuing light can be poured. But the Reshimu is also the root of the Qliphoth: what remains after the departure of fullness cannot fully hold the new light, and it is from this «remnant» that the shells are born.

→ see Tzimtzum, Qlipha
Yichud
יִחוּד
Yichud

«Union», «joining». The Kabbalistic practice of mentally uniting two Names of God or two Partzufim — for example, Tiferet and Malkuth (Zeir Anpin and Nukva). Not mere meditation: an act that alters the structure of the Divine fullness and contributes to Tikkun. Every prayer performed with the right kavanah is a Yichud. In Lurianic practice there are formal «Yichudim» — sequences of letters that must be mentally «fused» in a definite order.

→ see Partzufim

The Dark Tree

Qlipha  / Qliphoth
קְלִיפָּה  / קְלִיפּוֹת
Qlipha / Qliphoth

«Shell», «husk» (sing. Qlipha, pl. Qliphoth). In Kabbalah — the counterpart of the Sephiroth: the dark «shells» that compose Sitra Achra, the Other Side. The Qliphoth are not evil in any moral sense: they are what is left when the spiritual light has departed or been cut off. In the Lurianic conception, the Qliphoth are the fragments of the broken vessels (Shevirat ha-Kelim), filled with the scattered sparks of light. Their nature is not active evil, but the absence of spiritual content with the preservation of form.

Sitra Achra
סִטְרָא אַחְרָא
Sitra Achra

«The Other Side» (Aramaic). The central term for the dark aspect of Kabbalistic reality. First used widely in the Zohar as the designation of the kingdom of impurity standing opposite the Tree of Life. Sitra Achra is not simply «evil»: it is an ontologically real region with its own hierarchy, its own tree (the Dark Tree, the «dark» ten Qliphoth) and its own rulers. In the Zohar, Sitra Achra is precisely the dwelling place of Lilith, Samael and the demonic forces.

Shevirat ha-Kelim
שְׁבִירַת הַכֵּלִים
Shevirat ha-Kelim

«The Breaking of the Vessels» — the Lurianic concept of the catastrophe of creation. In the course of the primal flow of light from Ein Sof, the vessels (Sephiroth) could not bear the load and shattered. The fragments fell downward, carrying with them the sparks (Nitzotzot) of Divine light. The Qliphoth are precisely these fragments: shells without content, but with the sparks lodged within them. This is why work with the Qliphoth has meaning in the Lurianic tradition: the freeing of the sparks from the shells.

→ see Nitzotzot, Tikkun
Nitzotzot
נִיצוֹצוֹת
Nitzotzot

«Sparks» (sing. Nitzotz). The sparks of Divine light that were captured by the Qliphoth at Shevirat ha-Kelim. They are held captive in the shells, awaiting liberation. The Nitzotzot are the answer to the question of why the world is imperfect: the light is scattered and hidden. The task of Tikkun is to gather the sparks back. This gives the Qliphoth a paradoxical value: there is something within them to be freed.

Tikkun
תִּיקּוּן
Tikkun

«Repair», «mending». The Lurianic concept of cosmic repair: the process that reverses Shevirat ha-Kelim. Tikkun olam (the mending of the world) is the work of freeing the sparks and restoring the original wholeness. Every religious act performed with right intention (kavanah) contributes to Tikkun. In the Western occult tradition the concept is reinterpreted: work with the Dark Tree can also be regarded as a form of Tikkun — the liberation of what is stuck in the Qliphoth.

Tunnels of Set
Tunnels of Set

The 22 paths of the night-side of the Tree, developed by Kenneth Grant in Nightside of Eden (1977). To each of the 22 paths of the Tree of Life corresponds a dark tunnel, inhabited by a specific entity and linked to a particular Tarot Arcanum. If the paths of the Tree of Life are the ascending routes of consciousness, the Tunnels of Set are their reverse, descending corridors into the structures of the night side. The concept is absent from classical Kabbalah — it is an invention of the Typhonian tradition.

Naamah
נַעֲמָה
Naamah

«Pleasant», «sweet» — ironic, since Naamah is one of the four «mothers of demons» (alongside Lilith, Agrat and Mahalath). The ruler of Nehemoth — the tenth Qlipha, the reflection of Malkuth. In the Zohar Naamah is described as the sister of Lilith, the most dangerous to unborn children and to mothers. She corresponds to Venus in her dark aspect; in modern demonology she is often identified with other lunar-erotic beings.

→ see Nehemoth
Adam Belial
אָדָם בְּלִיַּעַל
Adam Belial

«Man of Worthlessness», «Adam of Darkness». The dark double of Adam Kadmon on Sitra Achra. In Grant's system — the cosmic archetype of the Anthropos of the shadow side. Not the «devil» or the «enemy» in any moral sense, but ontologically parallel. He is mentioned obliquely in the Zohar: as the structure in which all the Qliphoth stand in an inverted, reversed composition — each Qlipha in the place of its corresponding Sephirah, but turned by its opposite face.

Methods and instruments

Gematria
גִּימַטְרִיָּה
Gematria

A numerical system of interpretation: each letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a numerical value, and words with the same sum are considered linked in meaning. In the occult tradition, Gematria is used to uncover hidden connections between concepts, demonic names, names of God and key terms. Example: Choronzon = 333, which is read as half of 666 (the number of the Beast), defining his nature as one of «principled incompleteness».

Pardes
פַּרְדֵּס
PaRDeS

«Garden» (and at the same time an acronym). The four levels of interpretation of the sacred texts: Peshat (the literal sense), Remez (the allegorical), Derash (the homiletical, the instructive), Sod (the secret, mystical). Kabbalah works predominantly at the level of Sod. The word «Pardes» is also connected with the story of the four rabbis who entered the Pardes (the mystical realm): one died, one went mad, one became a heretic — and only one (Akiva) came out unharmed.

Kavanah
כַּוָּנָה
Kavanah

«Intention», «concentration». In practical Kabbalah and Judaism — conscious intention while performing an act or prayer. Without kavanah, ritual is an empty form. With kavanah, it is work toward Tikkun. The concept is important for understanding why outwardly identical actions can have fundamentally different spiritual consequences.

Devekut
דְּבֵקוּת
Devekut

«Cleaving», «adherence». The supreme aim of Kabbalistic practice: the continuous cleaving of consciousness to Ein Sof, a state in which the distinction between man and the Divine becomes transparent. Achieved through kavanah, prayer, tziruf, meditation. In Hasidism, Devekut is not a temporary ecstatic experience but an enduring state. On the Dark Tree, the mirror concept — «cleaving to Sitra Achra» — is described in later occult texts as a dangerous but sometimes used form of ritual identification.

Gilgul
גִּלְגּוּל
Gilgul

«Wheel», «rotation» — the Kabbalistic concept of the transmigration of souls. Unlike Indian reincarnation, Gilgul is not a moral punishment but a mechanism of Tikkun: the soul returns in order to complete what was unfinished, to free the sparks not released in a former life. Chaim Vital set down Luria's works on the subject in Sha'ar ha-Gilgulim («The Gates of Reincarnation»). Gilgul can be multiple; parts of one soul can be incarnated in different people at the same time.

→ see Tikkun
Tziruf
צֵרוּף
Tziruf

«Permutation», «combination». The Kabbalistic practice of meditation developed by Abraham Abulafia: systematic work with the letters of the Name of God — their rotation, breathing them into form, mental pronunciation in various permutations. The aim is the attainment of the prophetic state through stepping beyond the ordinary perception of language. A tradition parallel to the Zohar: if the Zohar is the theosophical contemplative path, tziruf is the ecstatic meditative one.

Key figures

Lilith
לִילִית
Lilith

The first woman in some versions of the Midrash — fashioned from the same earth as Adam, refusing to submit and leaving Eden. The mother of demons, the ruler of Gamaliel (the dark Yesod). In the Zohar, Lilith is the «wife» of Samael on the Other Side. In Grant's Typhonian tradition — a key figure of lunar magic, linked with the forces of the unconscious and erotic magic. Her sister is Naamah, the ruler of Nehemoth.

Samael
סַמָּאֵל
Samael

«The Poison of God» or «the Blind God» — one interpretation of the name. In late antique Jewish literature, Samael is the angel of death and the accuser. In the Zohar — the «husband» of Lilith on Sitra Achra, the embodiment of the principle of accusation and poison. He differs from the Qlipha of the same name: Samael as a being is far broader and older than the system of the Qliphoth. In the occult tradition he is often identified with Satan.

Choronzon
Choronzon

The demon of the Abyss in the Western magical tradition. Number — 333. Nature — fragmentation, the principled incapacity for unity. Crowley invoked him in 1909 in the Algerian desert. In Grant's system, Choronzon is not the ruler of a Qlipha, but a property of the space of the Abyss: the one who crosses the Abyss meets him not from outside, but discovers him within. This makes him ontologically different from the archons of the Qliphoth.

Metatron
מֵטָטְרוֹן
Metatron

The highest angel of Jewish mysticism. In one version — Enoch transformed into an angel; in another — an original Divine emanation. In Kabbalah — the «Lesser YHWH», the representative of Ein Sof to the lower worlds. On the Tree of Life he is linked with Keter. The name of Metatron traditionally serves as a protective formula against Samael. In the occult tradition he sometimes acts as mediator in high-level workings — but almost never answers quickly.

Ashmodai (Asmodeus)
אֲשְׁמְדַאי
Ashmodai / Asmodeus

A demon-king in the Talmud, the Zohar and the Book of Tobit. The ruler of Ga'agsheblah (the Qlipha of Chesed) in Crowley's system. Not a «lesser demon» — he possesses his own «palace» and considerable autonomy. In medieval legend, Ashmodai is the adversary of King Solomon, until the latter subdues him by the ring bearing the Tetragrammaton. In the Goetia he is the 32nd spirit. Linked with licentiousness and compulsion — hence the correspondence with a distorted Chesed, mercy without measure.

Parts of the soul

Nefesh
נֶפֶשׁ
Nefesh

The lowest level of the soul — the animal soul, the vital force linked to the body. Nefesh is bound to the blood and to physical existence. Corresponds to Malkuth. After death it remains tied to the body longer than the other parts. It is the nefesh that is most vulnerable to the influence of the Qliphoth — as the lowest and densest aspect of the human being.

Ruach
רוּחַ
Ruach

The middle level — the moral and intellectual soul, the «spirit». Ruach corresponds to the six middle Sephiroth (from Chesed down to Yesod). It is the level of character, will, thought and moral choice. In the context of work with the Qliphoth, the ruach is the field of battle: it is here that it is decided in which direction the human will is turned.

Neshamah
נְשָׁמָה
Neshamah

The highest level — the Divine soul, the «breath». Neshamah corresponds to the three Supernal Sephiroth. It is the part of the human being that is inseparable from Ein Sof — the direct link with the source. The neshamah cannot be defiled by the Qliphoth directly — and that is precisely why the chief strategy of Sitra Achra consists in isolating the nefesh and the ruach from the neshamah, rather than attacking her head-on.

Key texts

Zohar
זֹהַר
Zohar

«The Book of Splendour» — the central text of Kabbalah, composed in the 13th century in Spain (attributed to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai; the actual author was Moshe de León). Contains the developed conception of Sitra Achra, the names of Lilith and Samael in their demonological sense, and descriptions of the Qliphoth as the structural double of the Tree of Life. Most later texts on the Qliphoth derive directly from the Zohar.

Lurianic Kabbalah
קַבָּלָה לוּרִיאָנִית
Lurianic Kabbalah

The system developed by Isaac Luria (the Ari, 1534–1572) in Safed and recorded by his pupil Chaim Vital in Etz Chaim. It introduced the concepts of Tzimtzum, Shevirat ha-Kelim, Tikkun and Nitzotzot. It radically reconceived the nature of the Qliphoth: from mere «evil» they became the fragments of broken vessels with sparks of light lodged within them. The Lurianic system became the basis for most subsequent occult elaborations of the theme of the Qliphoth.

777
777 and Other Qabalistic Writings

A book by Aleister Crowley (1909) — extended tables of correspondences of Western magic. The standard reference work, in which each Sephirah and each path of the Tree receives its correspondences: colour, planet, angel, demon, Tarot Arcanum, incense, plant, stone. Column 5 («Qliphoth») is the only systematic summary of the archons of all ten Qliphoth in one place. Without this book, modern occult demonology would look different.

Sefer Yetzirah
סֵפֶר יְצִירָה
Sefer Yetzirah

«The Book of Formation» — the oldest Kabbalistic text (3rd–6th c.), attributed to Abraham. It expounds the doctrine of creation through the 10 Sephiroth and the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet: God created the world by «engraving, hewing, weighing, permuting and combining» (the letters). The whole later theory of letters as cosmogonic elements is built upon Sefer Yetzirah. Brief, terse, almost hermetic — the commentary upon it exceeds the text itself.

Kabbala Denudata
Kabbala Denudata

A two-volume Latin work by Christian Knorr von Rosenroth (1677–1684), the first systematic translation and paraphrase of Kabbalistic texts for Christian Europe. Includes fragments of the Zohar, an exposition of the Lurianic system and an extensive commentary. Through this book Mathers, the Golden Dawn and Crowley received their access to Kabbalah — without it, Western magical Kabbalah would have been impossible. Builds upon Athanasius Kircher's Oedipus Aegyptiacus (1652–1654).

«A glossary is a map, not the territory. Terms point at something; they are not the thing they point at.» — a principle that applies to the whole Kabbalistic tradition
Words are the shells of meanings.
