22 fragments  ·  From Sefer Yetzirah to Luria and Grant

by the number of paths on the Tree · by the number of letters of the alphabet

This is neither a textbook nor an encyclopedia. These are twenty-two fragments chosen on a single principle: each of them does something to the one reading — makes him stop, reread, set aside. Where possible, the text is given in the original (Hebrew or Aramaic); the English translation follows tradition but is not always literal. The commentary is brief — not in order to explain, but to indicate where to look. Sources are authentic; paraphrases and later retellings are marked openly.

· I · אֵין סוֹף The Infinite and the Contraction
בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים

«In the beginning Elohim created». Not YHWH, not El Shaddai, not Ehyeh — but Elohim, the name of Judgment. Creation began with Severity, not with Mercy. Evil entered along with the light, as a shadow enters along with the object that casts it.

Zohar I, 15a (commentary on Bereshit)

The Torah opens on Bet, second in the alphabet and not first, so that Aleph becomes the letter left unspoken: the silence that precedes the beginning.

עֶשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת בְּלִי מָה — עֶשֶׂר וְלֹא תֵשַׁע, עֶשֶׂר וְלֹא אַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה

«Ten Sephiroth out of nothing — ten and not nine, ten and not eleven. Understand with wisdom, ponder in imagination.»

Sefer Yetzirah 1:4 (2nd–6th centuries)

The oldest Kabbalistic definition works by negation: the number ten is fixed by refusing nine and refusing eleven, not by listing properties. The eleventh, which the text excludes without naming it, will later be called Da'ath.

«Before creation there was Ein Sof — the Infinite — filling all of itself. There was no place in which He was not, for everything was Him. Then He contracted — withdrew from the center toward the edges — and a round Void, Chalal, was formed within Him, into which creation was to enter.»

Chaim Vital, Etz Chaim, sha'ar 1 (a retelling of the tzimtzum)

The Lurianic reversal holds in one claim. God's first act is not creation but absence, because what creates is a *withdrawal*, not a making, and everything that exists now exists inside the hole that withdrawal left behind.

«All names and all epithets are His. But He Himself is not a name. A name begins when there is one who names. Before creation there was no one to name.»

Zohar III, 70a (after the manner of)

Before the tzimtzum there are no names. There is no distinction yet to name, and a name becomes possible only once He has stepped away from Himself and left something separate enough that it could be called by one.

· II · שְׁבִירַת הַכֵּלִים The Breaking of the Vessels

«When the light entered the vessels of the first creation, six of them — from Chesed down to Yesod — could not hold it. They broke. The light that had been within returned in part to the Source, and in part fell downward — and became sparks enclosed in shards. These shards are the Qliphoth. These sparks are the Nitzotzot.»

Chaim Vital, Etz Chaim, sha'ar ha-Melachim

Lurianic theodicy fits into a single picture. In it, evil is not the opposite of good but its undissolved residue, and the shell holds the light captive not out of malice but because the vessel it was given proved too weak to contain it.

«Seven kings of Edom reigned before a king reigned over the children of Israel. And they died.» Seven — these are the Sephiroth of the first, broken creation. They died because there were not yet Partzufim, the Faces, capable of holding the light in equilibrium.

Zohar III, 135a (Idra Rabba), retelling of the key passage

Bereshit 36 supplies Lurianic cosmology with a direct biblical basis: its kings of Edom are read not as historical rulers but as the first worlds, the ones that could not withstand the light poured into them.

«Had Keter, Chokmah, and Binah been broken — creation would have been impossible. Only the lower six. The head survived; the body fell apart. From this we know what is to be done: gather the body back together. The head will help.»

after the manner of Etz Chaim, sha'ar 8

It is a consoling asymmetry: not everything broke. The highest Sephiroth, Abba, Imma and Arikh Anpin, were preserved whole, and Tikkun remains possible precisely because something survived intact enough to raise the rest toward.

תִּקּוּן

«Tikkun is not repair. It is the reassembly of the light anew, in new vessels — Partzufim, Faces. The former vessels will not return whole. They will remain shards, but the shards will no longer be a prison for the sparks. The light will know its way to itself.»

after the manner of Lurianic Kabbalah (Vital, Shmoneh She'arim)

The key word here is *new*. Tikkun is not restoration but reassembly: the world does not return to whatever state preceded the fall, it moves forward into a configuration that has never existed before.

· III · סִטְרָא אַחְרָא The Shells and the Other Side
סִטְרָא דִשְׂמָאלָא, סִטְרָא אַחְרָא

«The left Side is the Other Side. From Gevurah issues fire, and within that fire is the root of all evil. Not because Gevurah is evil; but because from severity, unmitigated by mercy, the unclean is born.»

Zohar II, 184b — Tikkunei Zohar

The left side of the Tree belongs to Gevurah, the right to Chesed. Evil is ontologically bound not to darkness as the opposite of light but to the pillar of severity itself, to an *excess* of light that nothing holds in balance.

«The ten Qliphoth — ten crowns of the unclean, paired with the ten Sephiroth of holiness. Between them runs the line of the Abyss. He who crosses it loses his name. He who remains loses his way.»

after the manner of Tikkunei Zohar, ch. 70

Later Kabbalah of the Qliphoth will build on exactly this systematics, where the symmetry between evil and good works as a structural principle, not a moral one.

«Lilith did not fall. Lilith left. She was the first, made from the same earth as Adam, and refused to lie beneath. She pronounced the Name of God — that very one, the unspeakable — and departed. She is not the one for a sin outside paradise; she is the one who refused a paradise in which there was no place for her.»

Alphabet of Ben Sira, 10th–11th centuries

Lilith's image in the Kabbalistic tradition traces mainly to this late midrash. In Gamaliel she reigns as the nocturnal consort, although the story that defines her begins with *refusal*, not with a fall.

«Satan is not God's adversary. Satan is the accuser in the heavenly court, ha-Satan, *the one who stands against*. He carries out the work for which he was made. When Job suffers — Satan says what a prosecutor must say: test the sincerity.»

after the manner of Job 1 — commentary of the Zohar

Satan here is still pre-Zoharic: a function, not an essence. Later, after the Lurianists and then Grant had rewritten him, Satan became an independent actor of the Other Side.

«The shells surround the fruit. If the fruit is rotten — the shell protects the world from the rot. If the fruit is alive — the shell protects the fruit from the world. Therefore one cannot at once determine what is inside the shell. One must listen.»

paraphrase from the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov (Hasidic tradition, 18th century)

Hasidic tradition rehabilitates the shell late, turning it from an enemy into a necessity, which softens Lurianic severity even though the softening drains away the drama that made the earlier reading of the Qliphoth so stark.

· IV · נִיצוֹצוֹת Sparks and Repair

«Three hundred sixty-eight sparks fell into each of the ten Qliphoth. To free them — not at once. Every good deed performed in the right intention frees one. When the last comes out — the end of days will come.»

retelling of Etz Chaim, sha'ar ha-Nitzotzot

Eschatology here turns Lurianic: history becomes not a line of events but a statistic of freed sparks, and it will not end until no light remains anywhere in captivity.

«Sometimes the holy one descends into the unclean — in order to raise a spark from there. This is called yeridah le-tzorech aliyah — descent for the sake of ascent. He who cannot descend will not be able to rise higher than his former level either.»

a Hasidic thought going back to Luria (the Maggid of Mezeritch, 18th century)

Work with the Shadow rests on this ethical grounding: it follows not in spite of Lurianic cosmology but because that cosmology demands it as a direct and unavoidable consequence.

«There is no absolute evil. There is only light, used wrongly. The light of Chesed, given to the wrong place — becomes Gha'agsheblah, excess. The light of Gevurah, unrestrained — becomes Golachab, fire without direction. Every Qlipha is a Sephirah that has lost its equilibrium.»

paraphrase of Lurianic thought (after Vital)

For work with the Qliphoth, this phrase matters: it names not separate entities of evil but a *pathology of the structure of light*, which brings Kabbalah close to later psychoanalysis even though it carries none of that discipline's reductionism.

יִחוּד

«Yichud is union. Not of two bodies, not of two souls — of two Names. He who performs the Yichud between Tiferet and Malkuth, he repairs the heavens. He who performs the Yichud between Chokmah and Binah, he repairs himself.»

Zohar III, 7b — Lurianic commentary of Vital

Kabbalistic prayer always joins two Names together instead of speaking them apart. That is why it is neither request nor thanksgiving but an action performed within the structure of the Tree, where the names themselves do the work.

· V · דְּבֵקוּת Ascent and Cleaving

«The Name of God has seventy-two forms — Shem ha-Mephorash. Each form corresponds to an angel. Each form corresponds to an hour, a day, a state. He who knows all seventy-two — can pronounce any word as the name of God, and any word becomes such.»

paraphrase of Abulafia's teaching (Sefer ha-Tziruf, 13th century)

Ecstatic Kabbalah seeks ascent through work with the letters, not through symbolic contemplation of the Tree. It is a parallel path that the West has almost never learned to walk.

«When you sit and read the Zohar — do not try to understand. The Zohar is written not for understanding, but for dwelling within. Open the page. Remain. The light will come of itself, if you do not call to it.»

attributed to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (legendary)

Reading the Zohar inside the traditional school starts from this instruction. The aim there is not hermeneutics but presence, since the book is built to act on the reader, not to speak to him.

«The Tree of Life is inverted. Its roots are in the heavens, its branches — in the earth. He who wishes to ascend must descend into the foliage. He who wishes to grasp the roots must pass through the trunk from top to bottom.»

paraphrase of a general Kabbalistic motif (going back to the Bahir and the Zohar)

The inverted Tree is an image that recurs throughout the tradition. Ascent and descent mirror each other so closely in it that refusing one amounts to refusing the other as well.

«Silence is the tenth Sephirah. Not Malkuth — Silence. Of it one does not speak, because to speak of it is to lose it. Malkuth is its reflection in speech. The root itself remains unnamed.»

after the manner of Sefer ha-Bahir (12th century)

Mystics resolve this paradox in different ways. One answer holds that silence is not the absence of speech but the limit speech eventually runs into.

«Kabbalah cannot be learned. Kabbalah can only be recognized anew — what the soul knew before birth and forgot when entering the body. The teacher transmits nothing. The teacher only reminds.»

attributed to the Ari (Isaac Luria, oral tradition)

The principle behind every mystical school is this: knowledge is never transmitted, only recollected. Plato called it “anamnesis”; Luria reframed it as work with the spark of the soul enclosed inside the dense body.

· VI · echo Vox Latina A voice from outside the tradition

«A single chain of wisdom runs through the ages. Hermes Trismegistus transmitted it to the Egyptian priests; the priests — to Moses; Moses — to the prophets; the prophets — to the sages of Greece. The Kabbalah of the Jews, the hieroglyphs of the Egyptians, the mysteries of Eleusis — these are one and the same truth, hidden beneath different veils. He who sees the veil does not see the truth. He who sees the truth ceases to need the veil.»

Athanasius Kircher, «Oedipus Aegyptiacus», Rome 1652–1654 — retelling of the doctrine of prisca theologia

Western esotericism runs on this nerve for the next three hundred years: the conviction that a single source lies hidden beneath every tradition. Disputable as a historical claim, it works without fail as a structure of thought, and without Kircher there is no Knorr von Rosenroth, no Lévi, no Golden Dawn, and no this archive.
